A Portrait of the Portrait Photographer: Susan Sancomb

It’s been quite a while since I last had my own portrait taken. Probably because I am much more comfortable behind the lens than in front of it. Recently, I had a professional reason for an updated portrait and the image posted below is the result. Yup, that’s me. Hair a little more grey and skin a bit more wrinkled, but certainly happier, more confident and content with who I am. I love the people I surround myself with and that I am honored to call friends, family and “framily.”

Since my last portrait taken a decade or so ago, I’ve been busy raising my son (who is now in college), growing my business, traveling, reading, walking our various dogs (two of which we lost to old age, and then adopted a new wild pup) with my husband, walking beaches and hiking trails, riding my bike, attempting to be a gardener (with varied results), kayaking and spending important time with family and friends…basically, living life. I have continued shooting weddings and have fallen in love with portrait photography all over again – families and high school seniors being my favorites.

And, in exciting news, I have started photographing and creating personal artwork again. This marks an important time that I feel I must acknowledge as a parent, artist and woman. I love the work I do for my clients and it fulfills me with professional satisfaction. Making art just for myself is an experience I finally have time for again in my life and I treasure it. It brings me full circle and takes care of a part of me that needed to wait patiently while I took care of some of life’s other responsibilities. And when I was ready for it again, there it was, waiting for me like a banked ember I could breathe back to life. It’s absolutely thrilling despite not knowing entirely where this creative path will lead.

So, I continue on my journey as an artist, but now feeling the complete, fulfilling richness that comes from earning a living by creating for others and taking care of my own creative needs. It’s a beautiful place to be in and I hope you will join me by following along here on my blog, my instagram profile @susansancombphotography or by reaching out and talking to me about photographing you and the moments you want to remember through my lens.

About Susan

My wedding and portrait photography business is located in the heart of South County, Rhode Island close to URI and the scenic, south coast beaches. I grew up here and feel so lucky to be able to work and create in such a beautiful location! My approach to photography is much like my approach to life: creative, relaxed, natural and fun. I would describe my style as a blend of candid & photojournalistic with traditional & artistic images. I love taking the time to create some beautiful, romantic portraits of my brides & grooms, but also the spontaneous moments throught the wedding day.

I consider my website and blog a place where I can visually journal about the amazing people and places I get to photograph. Not only do I consider myself exceptionally lucky to be making a living taking photographs for people at important moments in their lives, but I also get to meet an amazing cross section of people I might not otherwise get to know. In the ten years I have been in business, I have had the chance to photograph couples riding high on the excitement of their recent engagement, on their wedding day, parents-to-be waiting to meet their new child, newborn babies, children marking milestone birthdays and families who want to remember a certain time in their lives by capturing it in a photographic portrait.

In more recent years, I have had the opportunity to photograph the weddings of younger siblings and friends of previous wedding clients, and the maternity, newborn and family portraits of couples whose weddings I photographed in years past. It feels amazing to know my creative vision of these occasions is a part of their lives and their family history and I am grateful for each and every one of them. When I say I love what I do, it is from a genuine place. I can't imagine doing anything else and feeling as creativly satisfied and pleased to make my clients happy.

I studied photography at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for undergraduate school and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
